For many individuals, urinary incontinence can be treated without medication or surgery. The vast majority of sufferers of this condition are women. However, the good news is that there are steps you can take to gain control of your bladder. Some of these home treatments include:
- Utilizing pessaries: These devices are inserted vaginally and help to elevate the bladder. In doing so, incontinence due to coughing, sneezing, exercising, laughing hard, et cetera is reduced.
- Kegel exercises: These exercises contract and relax the muscles of the bladder in an attempt to strengthen them. Regular Kegel exercises are effective in helping people in the early stages of urinary incontinence.
- Ample magnesium and vitamin D: This mineral and vitamin are important for muscles and overall health. Maintaining healthy levels for both have been shown to benefit bladder control.
- Maintaining a healthy weight: Being overweight or obese puts a strain on the bladder. Therefore, this can be rectified by losing some pounds.
- Say no to caffeine: Caffeine is a diuretic which means that it increases the volume of urine in the bladder. It can also cause the muscles of the bladder to contract and relax more often which results in frequent urination
- Proper hydration: Keeping the body properly hydrated helps to maintain a healthy bladder. A healthy bladder functions optimally.
- Bladder training: This is like an informal exercise routine. Training your bladder means holding your urine for as long as you can before urinating and extending that hold each time.
